Keep a look out for some of these signs:
Cycling On and Off: If your furnace is turning on and off repeatedly, it may indicate that an issue within the system is causing it to shut down before completing a full heating cycle. This could be a sign of a failing fan motor or simply a dirty heat sensor that needs to be cleaned.
Flame Color: If the flame is yellow, it could be caused by a dirty burner. This can cause the gas not to burn completely, resulting in your furnace not reaching its full heating potential. Additionally, incomplete burning can also lead to improper venting of carbon monoxide (CO). To ensure the safety of your home, it’s important to install a CO detector and test it regularly.
Rusty Flue: This is another indication of poor CO. Gas furnaces produce harmful levels of carbon monoxide, and the flue system is responsible for venting it outdoors. Proper venting of CO can also increase the efficiency of your furnace and prolong its lifespan, making flue maintenance an important aspect to consider.

Water Damage: If you notice a pool of water near your furnace, it’s a clear indication of a problem. It is likely that the condensate line is clogged or leaking, this can usually be fixed relatively easily. Many homeowners may not be aware that water is a natural byproduct of a gas furnace or air conditioner in operation.
Pest Damage: This is also a common problem, rodents like mice, rats, and squirrels can cause significant damage to your home’s mechanical systems, it’s important to conduct a thorough examination of the system and check for any signs of chewed wires or blocked vents. The same goes for animal activity on the roof, particularly around vent hoods. In some cases, the damage caused by pests may not be visible.
